Every Picture Tells a Story – American Generosity

The report from the builder is that everyone is so happy with the first three classrooms and the cistern. Gildas said the water from the cistern tastes great.
This is a huge step toward better health for the people of Dédékè. So much better than getting your water from a ditch by the side of the road!

Wishes Granted!
Sunday, November 14th, 2010We are ecstatic to report that LeapingStone has been awarded it’s first grant!
The Virginia L. Jones Foundation presented LeapingStone with a $5,000 grant. We are pleased to be the first international organization to be honored by them. This grant will allow us to build the latrines and hand-washing stations. We should be able to start almost immediately.
Nearly half of the people in the developing world lack access to safe drinking water, sanitation and proper hygiene. Infectious diseases are known to cause 1 in 2 deaths in developing countries. There is increasing evidence that proper hygiene plays a part in reducing risks of respiratory tract infections as well as diarrheol disease.
We feel that having proper latrines and hand washing stations at the school will be the start to better hygiene and health throughout the village. Along with building the latrines and hand-washing stations, we will provide education on proper hygiene and use and maintenance of the composting latrines. As with Phase I, villagers will be hired to take part in the building process. It is a perfect opportunity for them to learn a new skill that they can repeat within the village and beyond.
One of the best parts of these particular latrines is that they will provide fertilizer for the crops that are grown.
We continue to work toward funding Phase III — the final phase of our project in Dédékè. To that end, we have broken down the costs of individual items so that you can see specific items your contribution will supply:
1 blackboard — $20
shelving for books – $40
1 cupboard for learning materials — $100
1 solid wood door for classroom — $156
concrete steps into classrooms — $208
We have been so blessed with wonderful supporters. We invite you to check back often and watch the progress of Phase II. Thank you so very much.
PHASE I COMPLETED & ANNIE B’S REPORT!
Friday, October 22nd, 2010There is a lot to report. We are very excited to say that Phase I of the project is completed. We received the report from Gildas today. The school looks fantastic! The paint gives it the final touch it needed.
The cistern for clean drinking water is installed. This will help provide clean drinking water until the well is drilled. It will also be used as a back-up system when repairs on the well are needed.
Each of the classrooms has a blackboard. We are planning on providing new desks and chairs for the students.
We have also had our report on the Annie B Fund drive. Checks went out today, and thanks to you all, we raised $4,328.36!!!! This is so wonderful.
We are so grateful to all of you who participated. You continue to brighten the lives of these children. You are having a direct and positive impact on their lives. The pride they feel knowing they have a beautiful new school and that there are people in other lands who care about them is so empowering. We will continue to do our best to keep you up to date on the continued progress of the project.
We send our profound gratitude to all of you. You are the angels who make this possible!
